I believe with open enrollment all around our areas, that we could actually close in on having only so many school systems. Unless, times turn around i think this is a good idea to think about doing. For example, To strengthen 4 or 5 schools systems instead of 7 or 8. Just a thought, does anyone out there think this is good or bad idea? I just thought I would throw it out there, would it benefit or hurt our surrounding area in the long run? Thanks for anyones input.
Karl, Do you believe that would work? How and why? thanks for input.
I know other places that have done it. I am no school administrator and do not claim to be one but it makes sense.
Think about it, one school board, one superintendent, one set of rules, more bulk buying power. Now, I know that the people outside of Sandusky would try to stop this at all costs because of reasons we all know, but dare not say. However, lets forget about that. Lets look at real logical cost saving measures.
I am sure if it were implemented it would work. How? Well, that would take some lawyers and the current administrations and school board to work together.
Will it ever happen? No, because it makes sense and will save money, and why would we want to do that.
All you said, I agree. Thanks, very well put.
and this phantom perfect utopia of schools would have all the problems that the large schools have. with all that buying power how in the world would cleveland, toledo, detroit, and cincinnati schools have the problems that they do. Karl, you try to come across as all thoughtfull when you are really just spout impractical nonsence that appeals to the masses with out real detail ..........
Consolidation is never an easy thing, but it has been accomplished in areas more rural than Erie County. Where the demographics of a geographical county are very similar, rural schools tend to band together for the same reasons you propose (Seneca-Huron School, Berlin-Milan School, etc.).
In looking at Erie County, I would say that consolidation may be possible between some local school districts, but not all. There is a strong sense of ownership in some cases and there are reasons for this. Also, the economic diversity among the communities is quite varied. However, if what we are looking for is buying power, there is no reason whatsoever that the school systems could not place a blanket purchase order, setting aside the money they would normally spend and putting it in one major account. This order could then be divided upon delivery to each school district per their order. It would be alot of work that would also need someone to watch over this and then more manpower for aid in distribution.
These are just some of the things that come to mind for me.
Many states already have county wide school districts. I know that California and Arizona use this system. It seems to solve financial difficulties for a while, but eventually the problems return once all savings have been realized. Costs and educational mandates continue to increase while income does not stay ahead of them. The schools have the same problems all of us have in our home finances.
The teachers unions and administrations are bloated and waste a godawful amount of cash. Some school districts are good, some are bad, but they all are too expensive and lack competition and a reason for betterment.
What we need is to move away from the one size fits all method of education and allow for more, smaller schools with more teachers, but with less administrative and overhead costs. The only way we can do this is to build a better mousetrap, which starts by allowing more choice and opportunities for parents and our kids.
Going countywide offers even less choices to our kids and is a terrible idea. No thanks.
Ohio has used the voucher system with little change. Students generally do more poorly. The for profit, privatized schools have caused even more problems for families.
I consistently hear or read statements that are against teacher unions. Most of the time they disguise the fact they think that teachers are paid to much with statements about not being able to fire poor teachers. You, at least , did not try to do this. Do you really think that teachers are overpaid? Do you know any personally?
Society has changed. When I was in school I didn't know anyone with disabilities. Today our schools are very heterogenous. Why wouldn't we expect a race to the middle. No Child Left Behind really should be renamed all brains left behind or all kids in the middle. Private schools that are not paid for with public funds can choose who can attend.
I have a few relatives in the teaching field and at this level k-12 -- I know they are not overpaid by any means. If anyone believes there overpaid for what they do. I have to say go into that field and try it out, it really is a job. Not like some jobs that we all know have been overpaid for quite a bit of years now.
It's a proven fact that competition breeds innovation that allows for lower costs and better results. One not desiring competition or a means for betterment is a vote for the status quo.
It's been shown that vouchers and private schools create better educational results. There are numerous studies regarding how this was setup in Sweden and other places. It's hardly fair to judge this based on very small, underfunded voucher programs in Ohio designed to fail and not properly supported due to political expediency.
The problem is we need a better system and schools. Most schools now simply spend a big pot of money and continuously ask for more, hoping they can raise standardized test scores which are overinflated in value, and often a result of how much money a county has.
The point of a voucher system is to allow a choice for parents and kids. Choice and opportunity will make schools less expensive, and will absolutely offer better results.
A town with one mechanic or one plumber or one electrician solely would be an absurd notion. We have many since they allow for better service and we take our car or our business to the best. The same should hold true for schools, and choice and vouchers should be here and now.
I see that a snarky one proved me correct about the county school system. Got to love the internet snipers...
Anyway, what does anyone know about http://www.ecotohio.org/home.php I mean, everyone on here is such an expert and has all the answers so go ahead and unload.
Mr. Hungus I don't have all the answers, as you can see from my posts. Mostly I have questions. We will likely end up with fewer school districts through merging smaller schools or entire counties. I think that the ESC for each region will be the administrative hubs.
Here is what I do know about education: research shows that children excel in school when their parents are involved in their education. I mean more than showing up as room mother or for open house. They should make learning about many things a part of family life--like going on educational vacations, museums, national parks. Discuss civics, politics, various cultures, the arts and how all of these affect us.
To make public schools responsible for a child's health, behavior, and learning is not reasonable. Yet, we continue to add to curriculum.
I also think that the brains of a child today is different from the children of thirty years ago. I mean that they are natives to technology. Because they are growing, maturing, and using it in every aspect of their lives, they bore and loose interest very quickly. They have difficulty mastering some basic skills because of this. For example, to use and understand mathematics, we first master certain skills. Then we apply these mastered skills to a problem.
I watched my son, who was supposed to be studying for a final exam. The TV is on, his iPod is playing with ear plugs on, textbook open, notebook powered up, and he is in touch with friends using a chat program. I'm thinking this is chaos. How can he think. He gets an A on the exam.
This is what is missing in schools. They power down when they go into the building. Your above post has a link to an on-line school that uses technology in the learning process. I think that this type of school can be the answer for some students. What do you think?
Margaretta Board and Sandusky Board have been talking consolidation for about a month now. From what i hear Margaretta will be split between Sandusky and Fremont schoools. Thats a good start
That possibly could work out better? Of course, the parents will still have the option of open enrollment at neighboring schools. Like Bellevue, Clyde, and Perkins.
has a lot of students in Sandusky County. The whole Vickery, Townsend, and I think Whites Landing area is in Sandusky County.
No decision yet, but i think other schools were invited to talk consolodation too, Sandusky and Fremont were the most interested and had the most to offer.
Cross, I have to agree with you on this one! Just like schools not having busing, thinking that they will punish the parents so they will pass their levy. Then you hear that even if the levy does pass, they still aren't going to bring back busing. Talk about a scam!
As far as raising the standardized test scores....when you teach to the test, what do you expect? Of course the scores will be higher, duh! Who suffers? Not the teachers or administrators - but the children. Just because it says "No Child Left Behind" doesn't mean that you do it for them, it means that everyone should come together and be held accountable and that includes Administration.
Since this is opinion I'll give my 2 cents worth.
I'm not an education expert, but I have looked at past tests and analyzed some of the data on the ODE website. It looks like the standards are somewhat fragmented and unrelated to each other when you look at the grade level to grade level standards. They tend to push teachers to focus on a multitude of facts.
Think about that. What do you do, as an educated adult, when you want or need to know some fact? Do you have the ability to recall EVERYTHING? Or do you have the ability to find facts and process the information based on the source?
I think NCLB is a race to the middle. I often wonder is its purpose was to lift the children with cognitive needs at the expense of all else.
I wish there would of been Open Enrollment 4 yrs Ago!
My 2 Girls went to Sandusky High School and they are OUT now, thank the Good Lord Above, they made it out. I had to
pull my older one out and she Graduated her Senior Year through the State Homeschooling Program and
My my Younger One Barely made it out, since the Teachers are aggressive, they will actually try to ruin your
Kids Academics, they also have ONE THING on there minds, and its not School Work. When I dropped my
Girls off to school, at the Front of the School, it looked like the Teachers were dressed like Streetwalkers.
Paggalia is one of the Worst Pinciples EVER, He told me there Motto is Zero Tolerance, They have no
Patience with Kids, the Teachers instigate Fights just to cause a Scene and get the Police there to
create DRAMA. I cant even repeat some of the stuff I overheard my Kids talking about at
Sandusky HIgh. I ended of HomeSchooling my Youngest Daughter, which she got a
better education, since Everyday there was a fight and the class was interrupted. Ask any
Teacher from SHS and they are in Court Most of the Time. Its all for Drama for the Teachers.
The Principle threatened me, because I wanted to pull my daughter out of School. They
used my Daughter to create all kinds of Hoopla, Attention, and they will seek and destroy
whoever to get what they want, and that is there addiction to S. It would takes Hours upon
Hours to tell you all the Stuff they did to my Daughter at Sandusky High School. Its a
a Nightmare!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
THE STATE OF OHIO HAS A GOOD HOMESCHOOLING PROGRAM THROUGH THE BOARD
OF EDUCATION, AND YOU CAN ALSO HOMESCHOOL AND BECOME YOUR CHILDS
TEACHER THOUGH THE BOARD OF EDUCATION.
This entire post has no facts to it. I personally know a handfull of SHS teachers and just asked a couple how much time they spend in court. They laughed, turns out that none of the ones I have talked to have not spent even one minute in court because of SHS.
It is the same there as it was when I graduated, if you want the trouble and the drama you will find it or create it. If you want to go to learn and be productive you will find that as well. It is all up to the student.
You know what, you dont want to here anybody else, you just want to hear yourself talk. Those things happened. Those
Teachers you talked to must be a handful that arn't in Court. Those Teachers are aggressive, they spit in your Face,
and all there worried about is getting on there Cell Phone with a Parent and if they think they can Drum Up Some
Drama and Attract a Few People and Get Attention and CREATE SOME EXCITEMENT, AND BE THE CENTER OF
ATTENTION. And they know what People to Use to do this. And I went to that School Also. So dont Try and tell me something I dont know. I went through those Halls
and there were Knife Fights and Many Kids doing Drugs in the Back of the Class, Many People Drunk, So dont try to make that place out to be some Great Place.
I most definetely had some Great Teachers, Mr. Kozell(Golf Coach), Mr. Marquette(Asst. Golf Coash/History), Mrs. Brown(Biology), Mr. Irby(Law), Mr. Wilson(Wrestling Coach/Accounting), My Chemistry Teacher, Mr. File(Photography), My Geomatry Teacher etc.........All Very Intelligent People!
Those People at Sandusky High School Now are NOT TEACHERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Knife fights, teachers spitting in your face??? Keep typing and radomly capitalizing letters, I am sure people are taking you seriously.
She is cOrrEct. HerE iS vidEo ProOF FROm A SecURITy CamERA At ShS.
Randomly Capitilizing letters, and People wont take me Seriously. What does that have to do with Anything.
Its called Emphizing and Highlighting, Excuse me.
The Point is, your avoiding the Truth and Facts, you dont live in Reality. Look at Hungus, he surely went to
Sandusky High, he thinks Mr. goes at the end of his Name. We are Talking about Open Enrollment
at Sandusky High. My Point is Sandusky High should not even be included as a School. Your both
typical Arrogant I live in Sandusky. My family came here in the 1800.s and for what I dont know,
but they sure picked the wrong place.
RD2, if your typing, spelling, and writing style is any indication of Sandusky High School then you were correct in pulling your child out. However, my guess is that is not the case. Your "writing attitude" indicates the problem probably lies with you and your children.
Most, Wanted, please do not see "RD2" as a reflection of SHS. You hit the nail on the head.
Also notice that instead of running for School Board or doing something else constructive "RD2" has decided to throw blanket accusations out with no sources cited and no truth to back her up.
If there were knife fights there would be police reports, right?
Everyone knows that if you wanted the good alcohol or drugs you talk to the kids in Huron, Perkins, or St. Mary's. SHS only had cigarettes and weak pot.
Oh, and "Mr." is not at the end of my name, it is at the begining......
First of all, those are Typo's and its clear you have no Knowlege. What is it you Most Want? Im sure I can Answer that
question like most of these Guys in Sandusky want, is 18yrs or Younger, like all the other Teachers, etc....in this area.
You and the Teachers have something in Common and Im sure thats why your defending that Nothing School.
JimmyDecant, cant even spell his last name, so he abbriviates, Dahbecauseicant. As for Police Reports, they
obviously didnt call the Police at the School back in the late 70's. Sandusky High is a Pathetic excuse for all of you.
It doesnt matter, because this place is known for what they do and believe me, they know from Coast to Coast,
not to Come to this God for Saken place and have to get stuck here for more than a minute of there
precious time. People are building Amusement Parks all Over this Country, they will not be at the
Hands these kinds of terrorists and thats and Understatement, judging just by you three, with
you Filthy Smart %ss mounts. Who the H*ll wouild put up with that, and come here. You dont
have an ounce of Manners, you were Born and Bread that way. You three are a Perfect Example
of what this town is About. And your a Perfect example not to send your kids to place with
people like you, Verbally Abusing, and Im sure you physically abused kids in School.
Butch's up the ying yang here. This whole Country knows about Sandusky High, believe me!
Including some Government Angencies.
Wow, this just gets better and better. I seriously have tears in my eyes from laughing.
Really? I cannot spell my last name right? Ahhh priceless.
You even used the old "Government Agencies are watching" line. It is amazing that you get that desperate in just 4 posts.
Of course what should we expect from someone that claims that Don Lee is "brainwashing" her. Really, all it takes is a cartoon to brainwash you....why does that not surprise me.
I could pick you last post apart, but to be honest it is written in gibberish and barely makes sense. However, I do have a prolem with this line "you were Born and Bread that way". Hmmmm.... "bread"???? Well, I am not made from wheat, flour, eggs, and yeast so I can only assume that it is a "typo".
Do not be angry that some of us went through SHS and recieved an education. Do not be angry that you squandered your chance. Some of us were focused on improving ourselves, not looking for excuses and blaming others for our lack of effort.
Mr. Sandusky (Karl Hungus) has a great point. If you are that angered by the school why not run for the school board, or do something else constructive, instead of acting a fool on an internet forum.
I wouldn't care if my family came to Sandusky at the turn of time, if I didn't like living here with such conviction, I would move in a heartbeat. As far as Mr. Hungus, I really enjoy reading his comments. Keep on bringing your inputs and thoughts on all subjects. Sandusky born, and loving it here.
Interjections! Show excitement or emotion. They're generally set apart from a sentence by an exclamation point, or by a comma when the feeling's not as strong!

Random caps really aren't good grammar.Use interjections!
My niece graduated from SHS, and has none of your stories. I'm sure you might have some issues, but your experience doesn't seem to be the norm.
For the record, I graduated from (Sandusky) St. Mary's. I have family and friends who graduated from Sandusky High, and not one of them complained of there school. Now some of them have some awesome jobs, with no college education (imagine that). It's strange I have lived here over 40 years and not once heard how bad you have said it is. It's ironic, but I do need to say to you, that really you should move away from here. Not trying to be mean, but if you talk that bad of where you live, you are doing your "LIFE" an injustice by staying here. You are only stuck here by your choice, don't blame your family moving here in the 1800's. I hope you find happiness in some other area of the world. Good luck on your venture.
Can anyone figure out how she went from open enrollment to home schooling her child? I get that she hates SHS and the Sandusky area in general, but how is that related to open enrollment?
I am a parent with children in both elementary grades here in Perkins. I am just one parent who does not like open enrollment at all. First, our school board never took into consideration the younger students and how they pack them in like saradines for financial gain. Everybody always thinks money, money, money. Computers, windmills and how can we get more money. My husband and I moved here to this district because of the smaller schools and great education. Our school district is all about the money and not really about the kids anymore. I am seeing more and more that teachers, aides, bus drivers and students are all stressed. When you take 180 kindergartners slam them in a small building with first and second graders, there will be stress. Just pickup and drop off is choas. I have personally heard a parent that brought their children here say that they can't believe the free stuff they are getting, not appreciative at all. Now, they do not live here or pay any taxes in our school system and they are just happy with the free stuff. Are you kidding me?. Is this about the free stuff or getting your children educated, I am confused. So why is it that I have to pay my taxes but open enrollment students parents don't and they get perks? Plus, when you get people like that who could care less about the school system and more about what is in it for them, it makes me sick. I am not saying that everyone is like this but that is crap. I just believe where you live and pay your taxes is where you should go to school. So everyone who thinks that this open enrollment is great for our finances let me tell you, it is not that great for the younger kids. Let's make it about the kids not just about the money all the time.
I also live in Perkins and have kids in the school district.
While trying to ignore funding and talking about the greater good is noble, it's not very pragmatic. Schools need funds to educate and to help those with special needs. In the past children of schoolworkers enrolled in Perkins, and there were many, did not contribute funds to the schools. This was rough for our township. Open enrollment changed that. Also, you wrongly state Sandusky students do not contribute to Perkins school funds. This also is inaccurate and there is funding for all students. In addition, Sandusky kids are not eligible for bus service, so the parents who do open enroll have to be dedicated enough to bring their kids on their own. Most also are enrolling here because they feel their kids will have a better future. I personally support it and it seems to be working out quite well. We are getting a lot of good kids, and bypassing the devastating budget issues so many other Erie schools are facing.
You state it's just about the kids. I couldn't agree more. However, I think any other Erie County child that wishes to go to Perkins and has a parent who not only supports this but puts the time and effort is just as deserving of being here as our kids.
Well, I never stated anything about "Sandusky students". So when you say Sandusky students, hmmm..... I am not sure what grade your children are in but in the younger grades, there are alot of kids. Have you been in any of the elementary buildings lately? Yes the funding has helped but it has made for alot chaos. And I am all for people who support our schools but our buildings are packed to the rim. I just think that where you live is where you should go to school. Also, when teachers were able to bring in their children to go to school here, the teachers contributed by teaching our children. Most of the open enrollment students went into younger grades so if your children are in jr high or high school you did not see much of a change like the elementary classes did. Furry teachers lost their lounge to make another classroom and the special needs classroom was cut down to make room for another classroom for more students. All I am saying is we in the elementary grades have seen a huge change!

Why not just have one county school system : Erie County Schools?
