I had a pretty good week on the diet and with exercise. I did have one day - Wednesday - when we had to cut the workout off because I was too weak/tired to continue. I got some extra cardio work with a long walk at East Harbor State Park and a 10-mile bike ride on Sunday morning (my birthday).
My daughter and grandson came up from Columbus and we had a nice dinner of ravioli and garlic rolls and, of course, we had birthday cake to celebrate and the day, which was topped off when the Colts came back and beat the Patriots!
My personal trainer Trevor Tieche of Bodi N Balance took some measurements, and we have made some more progress. Not as much weight as I had hoped, but the measurements were pretty good, so I was happy.
It is going to be tough to make the 100-pound goal, but I think I can come pretty close.
On my long walks, I am averaging about 18 minutes a mile with heart rates between 105 and 125. I usually try to speed up on the last half of the walk to get the heart rate up a little higher. I have tried a little jogging, but my hips feel the pounding, so I guess I will have to hold off on more jogging until I get a little lighter!
I am thinking about doing some swimming this winter and possibly trying a short triathlon in the spring. I know I can handle the swim and the bike portion right now, but I am a little unsure of taking on a 5k or 10k run yet.
I am finally ready to get back to a more normal routine. After four weeks in the hospital, my wife is finally home for what promises to be a long road to recovery.
I have had a chance to shop for my usual "diet" food and I am planning on trying to be as true to the program as I can be.
Since I will be home all of the time, I hope to be able to supplement my normal workout program with some extra walking, bike riding and core exercises and at least get close to my goal.
I had a very hard leg workout with my personal trainer Trevor Tieche of Bodi N Balance twice in the past week and really feel an increase in strength and range of motion.
We are going to keep trying new and varied exercises to help me with my balance and flexibility, as well as increase my strength.
I have had a number of occasions to meet people I have not seen in awhile and have had some very nice comments and congratulations, as well as many motivational comments made to me about this process and the contest and whether FIT magazine is going to do it again.
The decision has not been made, but I believe FIT editor Brandi Barhite is trying to make it happen again for some very lucky people. You should keep watching for a final announcement.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact me. I am hoping for a positive monthly total to report to you soon. We are going to do some mid-month measurements next week, so I hope to have some positive results for you next week.
I got back on track with workouts this week, even though the diet part was very difficult again as my wife is still in the hospital recovering from surgery.
We thought we were into the home stretch, but had a setback as additional complications have presented themselves. It looks like at least four to five more days in the hospital and then to Great Lakes Transitional Care for some rehabilitation before she is allowed to come home.
I have had some additional time to workout since I lost my job this past week because of the slump in auto sales and the fact that I was the low man on the totem pole as far as sales were concerned.
I am back in the job market, so if you are looking for a good employee, please contact me at gipe@cros.net.
I have not gained any weight and had some pretty good changes in measurements, so I am quite happy. If I can get back to a normal eating schedule, I hope to come close to my goal in the next two months.
Another tough week at the Gipe household. My wife is still in the hospital —15 days now. She had a pretty serious operation Friday afternoon to correct some of the problems she has encountered with the pneumonia and associated complications.
She is now in the Intensive Care Unit at Firelands (outstanding care being given) and is making slow progress.
Needless to say, I have not had a workout since last week, but have returned to the gym as of Monday morning.
I did not gain any weight during my absence from the gym, so I feel pretty lucky. I also came down with some respiratory issues of my own Wednesday afternoon and missed three days of work and one day of not being allowed in the hospital because I was contagious.
I hope we are into the home stretch with my wife and we can get back to some sort of normalcy pretty soon. I hope to have a more positive and productive week and have something to report on next week.
This has been a difficult week. My wife has been in the hospital since Oct. 11 with pneumonia.
I only worked out one time with my personal trainer Trevor Tieche and that was short because I was very weak and my heart rate went quite high.
I did no workouts on my own since there was just not enough time between work and going to and from Firelands Regional Medical Center.
I must comment about the outstanding care my wife has been given while there. The ER staff when she was admitted was absolutely outstanding. Registered nurse Karen and Dr. Wyse (I hope I got the names right) were just wonderful in getting to the root of the problem and getting her condition under control.
Since she has been in, the nursing staff and respiratory staff has been wonderful — we could not have asked for more compassionate and excellent care.
I have worked out once this week and will try to go again in the morning. I still feel quite weak, physically, and I am trying to stay in control on the nutrition front, but it has been tough.
Planning for meals has been nonexistent and I have just thrown things together at the last minute to eat. I'm not making excuses, just stating the facts. Hopefully, I will have a better report next week.
The progress continues. The combination of the new eating plan and increased workouts, both with and without my personal trainer Trevor Tieche, has been pretty successful.
I am averaging 2 pounds per week of weight loss and the measurements have finally changed. It has given me a little more motivation, except for the past few days with my wife in the hospital with pneumonia and a few other complications. It is hard to sit there and watch someone feel so poorly and watch TV and read without eating something.
I have tried to take food with me, but it is easy to supplement that food with junk. Hopefully, she will get out in the next few days and I can get back into the routine.
I have been getting at least one long (20 miles-plus) bike ride in each week, in addition to three weight workouts and one additional cardio workout at the gym.
I have broken into the 250s and am hoping to be in the 220s by the end of the year. I feel great and the clothes are getting looser all the time. The bodybugg has been very helpful and an extra motivator.
The results for this month are pretty good.
I lost another 10 pounds, but the really cool part is that I actually felt my rib cage before I got out of bed. I haven’t felt my ribs in a long time! I also have another neat thing to report. If you will remember at the beginning of this process, I had hoped toactually have a “six-pack” of abs – well, I have the beginnings of a “two pack” as of today.
My two upper abs are actually beginning to show through the fat layer. Pretty cool, huh? I am now down to 260 – a total loss of 70 pounds.
We are doing measurements this week, so I hope that they will be even better. Will report more in next week’s blog.
I just got back from one of the most fun, short vacations I have ever had. I went to northern Michigan with a group of guys fishing for salmon. We had a great time "roughing it" and doing a lot of fishing and storytelling.
I got some very good workouts hiking into and out of the fishing area (very hilly), walking in the river, dragging fish (15-20 pound salmon) and having a very relaxing and enjoyable experience.
The scenery was beautiful and relaxing. We were on the river by 4 every morning. The diet did not really suffer, but there was a lot of temptation, and I thought I did very well.
In three and a half days, our group caught more than 100 salmon and that does not include the ones we released.
I met a lot of new guys; only knew three of 15-plus going into the weekend. I will plan on doing this every year from now on.
I do not think I would have enjoyed it as much or been as successful as I was without being in pretty good shape. This is just another benefit of this whole process.
I had a pretty good week, considering I was out of town for four days. I got four workouts in while I was home and managed to eat pretty well, considering there was a lot of temptation with the holiday weekend and all.
I haven't been on the scale, but I feel like I have lost some weight. It is going to be another tough week since I am going salmon fishing for four days with a bunch of guys.
I have promised my personal trainer Trevor Tieche of Bodi N Balance that I will get in some type of workout every day, even if it's just some core work and a long walk.
Eating should not be too difficult since I will be on the water most of the day and should be able to take some food and drink with me for the day and not be around too much temptation, except when we go for dinner at the end of the day.
Some of the guys know what I am trying to accomplish, so I don't feel like they will be tempting me too much. I know the trip is not an "excuse," so I will keep plugging away for another week —hopefully, we will be into some very new territory, weight wise, by the end of the month.
It is so hard to believe that we only have four months to go until the end of this wonderful journey.
While I have not lost as much weight as I had hoped by this point, I have learned so much about the process and myself.
I actually am learning to eat better. I still have my weak moments, but have been able to get right back up and get realigned with my goals.
This week was a good week for exercise. I worked out with my personal trainer Trevor Tieche three times and I had three good cardio workouts, including a 26-mile bike ride Sunday morning on a bike trail in Columbus.
My eating on Sunday and Monday were a bit out of line. I ate too much and not the right things, but I am back at it and will continue following the regimen for the rest of the week.
I am thoroughly enjoying the long bike rides once or twice a week and hope to keep it up and extend the distances through the fall season.
I have no excuses for my slip off of the wagon on the diet this week, but I have kept the calorie burn at a pretty high rate, so I know I did not lose ground.
