Single sign-on coming soon to a site near you

One of the things that has long annoyed me most about our websites is the proliferation of usernames. It seems like for every li'l thing you do on our sites, you've got to log in again.

Not for much longer. Later this week, you'll be able to sign into the comments on this website and into its forums -- wait for it -- with the same username! I know, crazy, right?

But that's not all! You'll also be able to use the same username on Funcoast! And about a month after that the same username will work on Fandy... Holy Cow!

How are we doing this magic trick? Through the magic of the internet.... Seriously, who really cares, the point is: one username!

Your user profiles will still be separate on each site. Which is to say that soon you'll actually have a user profile on sanduskyregister.com -- I know, I know, stop the insanity.

Anyway, this has been a long, long time in the planning and execution (it's more complicated than you'd think -- or at least, companies often make it more complicated than you'd think), so I hope it makes your life ever so slightly easier. I know it'll do that for mine...

Update

By Oliver Hardy (Senior Member) on Mon, 04/13/2009 - 12:31

Mr. White,

Thank you for directing me to the log out in the upper right of THIS page. Once I logged out, I was able to post to the Sanders story on the news blogs after I logged in again. Coming back to THIS page, I see where I was still logged out but still logged on to the news blogs. How can I be logged off and be logged on at the same time? I did not see any place to log off on the news blogs. Weird things are happening to this site. I tried to log on HERE to post this message and got that "almost blank page" as I did before on the news blog. On my second attempt to log in here, I had no problem and posted THIS message.

Nothing on my end has changed at all before the Sandusky Register revamped the site. If you desire, I can keep you posted of any additional problems as others may have the same problems as myself. I agree with you that it will take some time to work the bugs out.

Salute!

Mr. Hardy--

Again, I'm sorry the transition is making things difficult for you, please bear with us and we will do everything we can to clear the problems up for you and everyone else.

In answer to your questions:

The problems only affect some users because of peoples' individual browser settings, which server in the datacenter they hit, what ISP they're using, what kind of firewall they're behind, etc.

And what I mean by "very aggressive settings" is that our hosting provider hosts a lot of sites and caches our pages as much as possible, which naturally causes problems with logging in and out.

Anyway, you can easily logout of this blog or the forums by clicking "logout" in the upper right of every page -- we're trying to make sure that appears everywhere on the site.

And in order to login everywhere, you do need to accept our cookies, that's how we create a persistent session for you. As far as this "almost blank page" goes, can you tell me what is on that page so that I can diagnose it?

Thank you.

Still having problems

By Oliver Hardy (Senior Member) on Sun, 04/12/2009 - 12:08

Mr. White,

You wrote "We seem to be having an intermittent caching issue that only affects some users. It is caused by the very aggressive settings of our hosting provider. We are currently working with them to resolve the problem."  Why do only "some users" have problems and not others? I am using only one user name.

So far, I see no changes at all to the problems. What exactly do you mean by "very aggressive settings" of your hosting provider? I can delete your "tracking cookie" that shows up as spyware but have to accept it to post my comments. It seems that I am ALWAYS logged on to your blog if I lower my security settings. Why can't I log out? But if I want to comment to the news blogs, it shows me two boxes to either Log On or to Register and when I Log On, I get an almost blank page.

Why can't I log out of your blog? I have no interest in Fandy or the Funcoast sections nor do I bother to read them. I do like the "edit" feature which is a great improvement but having a spellchecker would be a plus.

Salute!

I'm sorry that you're having trouble. The reason you got the access denied error is because you are in fact logged in.

We seem to be having an intermittent caching issue that only affects some users. It is caused by the very aggressive settings of our hosting provider. We are currently working with them to resolve the problem.

While they really drive me nuts, these sorts of problems are somewhat inevitable when you do something like this, but they are *I hope* temporary, and worth the effort, long term. Obviously, we do try to minimize them, to keep both your and my annoyance level as low as possible.

And maybe we have different definitions, but I personally wouldn't call having separate logins for the comments and the forums on the same 'not broke!'

Sorry for the inconvenience, and please bear with us.

A real mess now

By Oliver Hardy (Senior Member) on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 17:40
Nick, I thank you for the reply. I tried to post just a few minutes ago to the Gallagher news blog and other news blogs. Except for this blog, I can't post to the news blogs. I tried to re-register and got the following message. "Access denied You are not authorized to access this page." How wonderful. If it wasn't broke, why try to fix it?

I realize that the merging of all these usernames is complicated, but the goal is to make things simpler in the end -- so that you'll only ever have to remember one username for our stuff.

So, to the big merger: Now that everything is merged, no one will be able to use your username on these stories, in the forums, or on funcoast.com, and you will be able to use the same username everywhere.

Your username will not change, unless you already have more than one.

  • If you have one on Funcoast, in the forums, and on news stories, all three will be merged into the Funcoast username -- we did it that way because Funcoast had the largest number of users.
  • If you had more than one username for commenting on the news stories, they will all be merged into the most recent one.

If you are not sure what your username is at this point, you can always click a 'login' link and then click the 'Request new password' tab. There you can have your login information sent to your email address.

Mr. White, While I do

By Oliver Hardy (Senior Member) on Fri, 04/10/2009 - 09:50

Mr. White,
While I do appreciate having to register with a unique username on these news blogs, I myself like the forums as they are now. I am currently not registered on the forums due to lack of interesting topics started by others. My questions to you are the following. I am registered now on these news blogs. What will happen to my chosen username if somebody else decides to use the same username on the forums? If only one username is needed to sign onto all of the newspaper's online content, what will happen to the username currently used on the news blogs? For example, what if somebody else decides to use "Oliver Hardy" on the forums, will I still be able to sign in as Oliver Hardy on the news blogs? Would the person using the name Oliver Hardy on the forums take away my access as Oliver Hardy on these news blogs? It sounds complicated to me, that is why I like the forums as they are and keep things simple. Maybe the Sandusky Register should start up some interesting topics on the forums to get more people to participate on the forums.

Lately you

By reader (Member) on Tue, 04/07/2009 - 21:38
Lately you have posted fewer breaking news stories from the current newspaper, sometimes posting them a day later. Did you decide you were giving away too much for free?

Also, its a bit insane to splash a teaser headline like the one this evening about the stimulus money for local projects without telling us which projects are being funded. You'll drive readers to other news souces and make your web site irrelevant.
